City approves UVM’s plans for new 699-bed dormitory

Burlington’s Development Review Board has approved plans for two new dormitories on the University of Vermont campus.

The review board approved the plans following a deliberative session on Monday evening, a spokeswoman in the mayor’s office said. A final public hearing for the dorms was held last week at Burlington City Hall.

The 195,000-square-foot project consists of two new buildings housing 699 beds, plans show. Costs are expected to reach $42 million at the site, which is right inside the main campus, located near the Ira Allen Chapel and Billings Memorial Library. Occupancy is expected by 2017.

The new undergraduate dorms, constructed in an effort to attract to new students, will be built at the site that was previously 10 University Place, just south of Ira Allen Chapel and north of the Bailey/Howe Library, according to the plans. The road will be renamed 170-180 Carrigan Drive. The dorms include dining facilities, a green roof, and various site improvements such as a bike shed, according to the plans.

Demolition will begin this week on the three 1947 dorm halls known as “the shoeboxes,” or Chittenden, Buckham and Wills, that were approved for removal in conjunction with the new project.

An online video about the history of the old dorm halls garnered 100,000 views, and sparked a surprise surge of interest in the buildings, said Rick Green, communications director for UVM. “You have married couples who met there.” In response, the university is leveraging the interest to help students: 500 bricks from the razed dorms will sold in a fundraiser for $50 apiece. (Half the cost will go to the UVM Scholarship Fund, the other half to shipping costs.)

Redstone, a Burlington-based commercial real estate development company,  is the new project’s consultant, and the dorms will be built and managed by UVM.

In the interim before the new dorms open, UVM students will be housed in apartments at the Sheraton Hotel, as well as at the Quarry Hill Apartments, off campus, according to the plans.
