BARRE — Public schools in Vermont are invited to compete for technology grants and could win a cart filled with 20 Apple iPads or Google Chromebooks.

The Educate/Innovate grant program is being offered for the second time through the Vermont Lottery, in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Education. All public K-12 schools are eligible to enter the competition, according to an announcement issued Monday.

Schools competing for the technology grant must outline in their application how they would use the devices in the school’s technology program.

Special consideration is being given to schools that are rural and have a significant population of students in the free and reduced price lunch program.

The goals of the program are twofold: to build public awareness on how the Vermont Lottery supports education, and to aid schools by providing technology that can support student learning.

The Vermont Lottery is allocating marketing funds to support the grant program.

The first winner was Charleston Elementary School. The students plan to interview older residents in Charleston about changes in communication over time. The school received 20 iPads and is slated to develop a series of podcasts next school year.

The latest grant application was released on Friday, and the deadline is Sept. 18. A winner will be announced in mid-October 2015.
