The Vermont Historical Society this week announced that former Gov. Jim Douglas will serve as the society’s interim executive director while a national search is undertaken to replace Mark Hudson, who is leaving in the fall.

Douglas will begin his part-time duties shortly and will overlap for a time with Hudson.

“We are thrilled that Governor Douglas has stepped in to lead VHS while we look for Mark’s successor,” VHS Board President Laura Warren said in an announcement. “That he is a great leader is well known, but less known is his long membership in the VHS and his understanding of the key role the VHS has in the fabric of Vermont’s unique culture.”

Douglas served four terms as Vermont governor; he left office in January 2011.

“I look forward to helping guide the VHS while it finds a new permanent director,” Douglas said in a statement. It is exciting to be involved at a deeper level with an organization I’ve belonged to and admired for many years.”

Since his retirement, Douglas has taught at Middlebury College as executive-in-residence. He has also written a memoir, The Vermont Way, and he serves on the board of National Life, NBT Bancorp, and several foundations.

Douglas resides with his wife, Dorothy, in Middlebury.
